Grid Integration and Stability

The structural changes of the electrical power system in the context of the energy transition and the increasing integration of innovative utilities have extensive implications for the stable system operation. In this context, the department grid integration and stability works on analytical methods and models for the development of innovative protection, control and operation concepts for transmission and distribution grids. The focus is on DC-point-to-point and multi-terminal systems as well as the interactions with the AC system. In addition, extensive stability studies of large scale power systems are conducted, measures for to ensure short- and long-term stability of the system are determined and concepts for the provision of ancillary services or the temporary islanded operation of active distribution grids are developed. Extensive laboratory equipment allows the experimental analysis and validation of simulation models and the developed control and protection concepts.

Central research topics:

  • Design and analysis of protection strategies and concepts for meshed DC networks
  • Evaluation of the interactions between AC- and DC-systems
  • Time domain simulations for large-scale power systems
  • Control and operating strategies to ensure system stability
  • Planning, evaluation and experimental verification of innovative protection schemes
  • Simulative and experimental analysis of the dynamic behavior of active distribution grids
  • Operational concepts for the temporary islanded system operation for distribution grids
