The Institute for High Voltage Technology (IFHT) and its more than 60 researchers work on a wide range of different research questions in the field of energy supply. In addition, we cooperate closely with Fraunhofer Institutes in the context of the digitization of energy supply. Due to the growth in recent years and the continuous development of our research and development topics, we restructured the institute's operations as of July 1, 2018.

The "Energy System Technologies" department develops classic high-voltage topics further. The range of work extends from the development of environmentally friendly insulation materials to electrical equipment for transmission and distribution grids (e.g. circuit breakers, cables, joints, overhead lines, etc.) to the secondary technology of future energy information networks in the fields of measurement, control, communication and information technology.

The employees of the Research Department "Grid Integration and Stability" work on analytical methods and models for the development of innovative protection, control and operation concepts for transmission and distribution grids. In this context, the impact of an increasing integration of power electronic and innovative devices on the power system dynamics are analyzed and future challenges with regard to different protection and stability aspects are identified.

The Research Department "Sustainable Energy Systems" works on the modelling, simulation and evaluation of the European energy system from the perspective of the energy markets as well as the transmission and distribution grids. The focus is on the simulation and optimization of central and local energy markets in Germany and Europe as well as the integration of electro-mobility. In addition, methods for grid planning in transmission and distribution grids as well as innovative and automated operational management concepts are investigated.

The department "Digital Energy" within the Fraunhofer Institute for Applied Information Technology develops and researches technologies for the operation, planning and security of digitized energy systems and markets with an interdisciplinary team. Research focuses on the simulation and concept development of central and local energy markets, the integration and use of new information and communication technologies (e.g. blockchain technology) in energy systems, and the development of IT security technologies for the prevention and detection of IT attacks.

The spectrum processed in this way ranges from the development of new insulating materials and electrical equipment to the modelling of cross-sector energy systems and markets to IT security within critical infrastructures.
